James Franklin discusses why Penn State didn't turn in taunting penalty for B1G review
James Franklin and the Penn State Nittany Lions suffered another disappointing loss to Ohio State as the program looks for that marquee victory in the Franklin era.
On Saturday, they had a ton of chances, but were unable to make the big play when they needed and loss to the Buckeyes 20-13. During the game, there was a play where the Nittany Lions were called for a really tough taunting penalty that extended an Ohio State drive.
The Buckeyes would go on and score 7 points off that, but Franklin said during his press conference on Monday that he didn’t turn the questionable penalty into the B1G.
“I did not turn that into the Big Ten officials this week because I know what the response would be,” Franklin said. “Technically, by the rules, there’s justification for making that call. I also know I watch college football, not only on tv but I watch tons of hours of cut-ups, that call could be made 5-6 times a game in every game in college football. For me to turn it in and for them to say ‘Well, technically that is.’ I didn’t turn it in.”
Franklin instead said the team used it as a teachable moment.
“But I think the way you address it is in a team meeting setting, it needs to be addressed,” Franklin said. “So not only does that player learn, that the whole team learns… It needs to be addressed with the individual, which it has. And it needs to be addressed with the group, which it has.”
Penn State will look to get back on track on Saturday as the Nittany Lions host Washington.
