James Franklin on balancing CFP selection process: 'Everybody should be in a conference'
James Franklin’s Penn State Nittany Lions are in the College Football Playoff for the first time, and they will get to host No. 11 SMU as the No. 6 seed on Dec. 21.
As was the case with many of the CFP head coaches Sunday, Franklin was asked about his thoughts on the current makeup of the Playoff and how teams are seeded based on the system.
Franklin explained that he believes every team should play in a conference and should play the same amount of league games. In his eyes, that would go a long way toward helping the committee chose the best 12 teams for the Playoffs.
“Everybody should be in a conference,” Franklin said. “Everybody should play a conference championship game. Right now … the College Football Playoff is trying to make a decision and not everything is equal. Everybody should be playing the same number of conference games. Everybody should be in a conference. Everybody should be playing in a conference championship game or not playing in a conference championship game. I think that would really help. That would be a good starting point.”
Of course, the only perennial Playoff contender that’s not in a conference is Notre Dame. Despite Franklin’s sentiment, The Fighting Irish are not expected to move into a conference anytime soon.
Franklin also mentioned that every conference should play the same number of conference games. Currently, the SEC and ACC only play 8 conference games while the Big Ten and Big 12 play 9 conference games.
Franklin’s Nittany Lions competed in the Big Ten title game and lost in a hard-fought 45-37 game, and they were only slightly punished for the defeat, falling from the No. 5 spot in the rankings to No. 6. That also came as a byproduct of No. 2 Texas losing in the SEC title game to Georgia.
