If it was up to James Franklin, the Heisman Trophy would go to Trace McSorley, no questions asked. That’s how highly the Penn State head coach thinks of his senior quarterback.

McSorley showed true grit and toughness in the Nittany Lions’ 30-24 win over Iowa on Saturday. His numbers weren’t the best, but he propelled his team to another victory, despite suffering a painful injury in the first half.

In the second quarter, McSorley suffered a leg injury that forced him to leave the game for the remainder of the half. But when the third quarter got underway, it was as if nothing happened. He ripped off a 51-yard touchdown run to give Penn State its first lead of the game.

The Lions never looked back. And Franklin had major praise for his quarterback after the game.

“He’s the best player in college football,” Franklin said of McSorley. “I don’t care what anybody says.”

McSorley finished the day completing 11-of-25 passes for 167 yards a touchdown and an interception. he also led the team in rushing, tallying 63 yards and a score on 12 carries.

All season long, McSorley has been one of the top dual threat quarterbacks in the B1G. But he proved how tough of a player he is with his second half performance against the Hawkeyes.

He probably won’t win the Heisman, but his importance to Penn State can’t be overlooked.
