James Franklin praises Julian Fleming's Penn State debut in spite of stat sheet
James Franklin and the Penn State Nittany Lions had one of the better wins this past weekend when they went and beat West Virginia 34-12 in Morgantown. The offense looked more explosive and produced a lot of big plays, which is something that has been lacking in the Penn State offense the last couple of seasons.
One of the biggest offseason moves for Penn State was to bring in former Ohio State wide receiver Julian Fleming. He had shown potential as a Buckeye when he posted 533 yards and 6 touchdowns in 2022.
While Fleming didn’t have any catches against West Virginia, Franklin had a lot of praise for his receiver in Monday’s press conference.

“I thought he played really well,” Franklin said. “There were a couple of times we tried to get the ball to him, but based off coverage it just didn’t work out that way. We definitely want to get him involved more early in the game. I think the most important thing is the things he could control, he controlled. He blocked really well and ran really good routes.”
Penn State only threw the ball 18 times in the game after building a 20-6 halftime lead, so that definitely played a factor in Fleming’s lack of touches. Fleming played 35 snaps, which was tied for the team lead for receivers with Harrison Wallace III.
The Nittany Lions will be hosting Bowling Green this weekend.
