A big day for 2021 Penn State signee Lonnie White Jr. turned into a loss for the Nittany Lions.

The news came Monday morning that White will bypass college football and sign a contract with the Pittsburgh Pirates. According to reports, White is signing for $1.5 million, an amount that comes in above the slot value of the pick he was taken at.

Later Monday evening, head coach James Franklin put out a statement addressing the news of White’s decision:

“Congratulations Lonnie, Reggie, and Big Lonnie,” wrote Franklin. “Our football family is incredibly excited for you all and the Pittsburgh Pirates organization. Again, stay present, focus on the process, and success shall be yours. Always know, we are here for you and still believe your best days in football are ahead!”

White was a four-star prospect out of Malvern, Pennsylvania for the 2021 cycle. He was among the highest-rated recruits for Penn State this year.

Best of luck to White as he goes on to begin his professional career!
