James Franklin reveals format for Penn State's Blue-White Spring Game
Penn State is getting ready to hit the field this Saturday for the Blue-White Spring Game. On Wednesday, head coach James Franklin met with the media to discuss a number of topics.
One topic Franklin touched on was the format of the spring game. According to Franklin, the Nittany Lions will come up with an offense vs. defense scoring format.
Part of the reasoning from Franklin is to give the offensive line some breathers and to set up some special teams scenarios:
Franklin on the format of Saturday’s Blue-White Game: “We’ll probably to offense vs. defense…to help out O-line out and to get some special teams stuff situated.”

Franklin also pointed to the spring game as a helpful piece for recruiting with the ability to host prospects for the weekend:
Franklin on the impact of the Blue-White game on recruiting: “I think it helps…It gives you the closest thing to a game weekend that you have. I’d make the argument that spring practices are really impactful as well because you get more time with [recruits].”

Franklin also discussed the competitions going on at two positions this spring for the Nittany Lions, particularly at the QB and RB groups. He noted Sean Clifford was shut down for periods of time to give Penn State a chance to see the other QBs in action.
Franklin also discussed competition at RB as the Nittany Lions look to bounce back with a more effective ground game in 2022.
Franklin noted that no decisions have been made, but the quarterbacks have gotten enough reps to get a feel for what they each bring to the table.

Franklin on competition in the running back room: “We didn’t have the production that we wanted [in 2021], and it wasn’t just because of them. There were a number of factors on top of that…I think we’re a program that embraces competition and I think that’s been tested.”
