Winning ten games is nothing to scoff at in college football. But for Penn State, hitting that double-digit win total isn’t satisfactory for the season. The Nittany Lions want to add a bowl game title to their resume for the 2019 season.

Penn State prepares to put its 10-2 record on the line on Dec. 28 in the Cotton Bowl Classic against Memphis (12-1), in hopes of getting an 11th win and a bowl championship this year. And the Nittany Lions have the opportunity to do so in one of the most iconic postseason games in college football.

Head coach James Franklin is looking forward to that opportunity, as well as the chance to bring some hardware back to Happy Valley.

“It’s one thing to get bowl rings. It’s another thing for these guys to be looking down for the rest of their lives and it says “Cotton Bowl champions,” on there,” Franklin said. “Being able to bring that trophy back to our facility and put it in our facility.”

This season marked the third time in four seasons that Penn State hit 10 wins. The Nittany Lions won 11 games in 2016 and 2017, and finished 9-4 last year. A win over Memphis would get the program its 11th win for the third time in four years, as well.

It would also even Penn State’s postseason record under Franklin. Currently, the Nittany Lions are 2-3 in bowl games under Franklin. Penn State was defeated by Kentucky last year in the Citrus Bowl, falling one victory short of that 10-win mark.

The Cotton Bowl is scheduled for a 12 p.m. ET kickoff time.
