Joel Klatt gave his thoughts on Penn State deciding to fire offensive coordinator Mike Yurcich.

On Sunday, James Franklin decided to relieve offensive coordinator Mike Yurcich, and Joel Klatt gave his take on his podcast, The Joel Klatt Show, on Monday.

“The offense wasn’t good enough this year and because of that James Franklin made a move,” Klatt said.

“This offense never evolved this season. This offense never became something it should have with the players that it had,” Klatt continued. “They have a lot of talented players on that offensive side and you’re sitting here in the last 4 fours and you’re 0-4 against Ohio State and Michigan, 19-0 against everybody else. And the main culprit was the fact that the offense never evolved.”

In the 2 games against Michigan and Ohio State, the Nittany Lions went 0-2 and the offense averaged only 13.5 points per game. Penn State is 8-0 in their other games averaging 43.8 points per game.

Klatt also stated how he thought the Nittany Lions’ defense played well enough to give them a chance to win but still couldn’t get it done despite that.

“Penn State is not close right now to Michigan or Ohio State. They’re not,” Klatt said. “They are defensively. In those 4 ball games, the defense played really well in 3 of them, and in particular this year. The defense this year played well enough to win both of the games. They gave themselves a chance on the defensive side and I think this defense is one of the best defenses in the country.”

Penn State hosts Rutgers this Saturday at noon ET on FS1.
