Joel Klatt likes what he sees so far out of Penn State.

Recently on his podcast, The Joel Klatt Show, the Fox Sports analyst said that the Nittany Lions have been delivering on offense, and, in his opinion, the difference has been first-year offensive coordinator Andy Kotelnicki.

Through three games under Kotelnicki, who came to Penn State from Kansas, Nittany Lions’ quarterback Drew Allar leads all of FBS in adjusted yards per attempt with 14.6 and leads the Big Ten in touchdowns responsible for with 10. Penn State is 3-0 and has the 17th-best scoring offense in the country, putting up 41.3 points per game.

Here’s Klatt explaining what he calls “the Kotelnicki influence.”

“He needed to create an offense that could be more explosive and get the best out of the quarterback, Drew Allar. To this point in the season, both of those things have been achieved,” Klatt said. “The Kotelnicki influence is working… So now this strong-armed, kind of statue quarterback that’s not going to run it a lot is doing what he should be doing, which is getting the ball downfield.”

Klatt also called Penn State’s run game “dynamic.”

Kotelnicki played Division III football at Wisconsin–River Falls, then worked his way through the coaching ranks in the FCS and lower division levels. At Wisconsin-Whitewater, he latched on to Lance Leipold’s staff and followed him to Buffalo and Kansas.

At Penn State, he succeeded Mike Yurcich, who was fired after the Nittany Lions lost 24-15 at home to Michigan last season.

Penn State, ranked 9th in the latest AP Top 25 Poll, hosts No. 19 Illinois this weekend.
