Michigan has more resources, but Penn State has had a better run of recent success. So who wins?

That’s the question ESPN’s Adam Rittenberg set out to answer in his latest “College football coaching jobs showdown” series. This installation pits the Wolverines against the Nittany Lions.

Penn State ultimately gets the nod here based on a number of factors, including its success on the field over the last 50 years and a superior “Program climate.”

Michigan was given the edge in two categories as well: Resources/administrative support and in recruiting/access to talent.

Here’s an excerpt from Rittenberg’s explanation on why he’s picking Penn State:

Penn State also has lost some luster, at least since the 1980s, when it won two national titles and recorded five AP top-eight finishes. While Penn State recorded three AP top-eight finishes in its first four years as a Big Ten member, the school hasn’t received the boost that some envisioned. But Penn State is more relevant in the league these days, and its program appears closest to Ohio State, both on the field and in recruiting. Penn State takes advantage of its regional recruiting advantages and provides an environment where coaches know they need to win, but aren’t judged solely by their performance against a superior program.

Michigan is still more national than Penn State, which has its benefits, but even Harbaugh hasn’t consistently capitalized on the advantage. You wonder if anyone can.

Michigan is 14-10 all time against Penn State, but the Nittany Lions have won three of the last four and seven of the last 11 in this series.

These two teams will meet in Happy Valley on Nov. 13.
