Penn State officially has its new offensive leader.

The Lions hired Fordham University coach Joe Moorhead as their new offensive coordinator. The reported move came two weeks after Penn State fired John Donovan.

“I am incredibly excited to join the Penn State Football family,” Moorhead said in the team’s official release. “My family and I are thrilled to be coming home. It is an unbelievable opportunity to help contribute to a program with a rich tradition and promising future. I look forward to rolling up my sleeves and getting to work.”

Moorhead just concluded his fourth season leading FCS Fordham, where he racked up a 38-13 record.

Before Fordham, Moorhead engineered the UConn offense that won the Big East and earned a trip to the Fiesta Bowl. He also spent time as an assistant at Georgetown and Akron.

The Pittsburgh native will take over a Penn State offense that didn’t reach its potential in either of James Franklin’s first two seasons in Happy Valley.

Under Donovan, the Lions didn’t progress enough offensively. Against B1G East powers Michigan, Michigan State and Ohio State, Penn State averaged just 14 points per game. They finished 108th in FBS in total offense, and allowed more sacks than any team in the B1G.

Moorhead’s presence, Franklin said, will provide a major boost.

“Many factors led to this decision. Joe’s makeup as a person and leader is outstanding,” Franklin said. “He is originally from Pittsburgh and has strong relationships throughout Pennsylvania and the region. He brings invaluable perspective to our staff as a former head coach. Most importantly his offensive production as a coordinator and head coach speaks for itself.”

It remains to be seen whether or not Moorhead will have three-year starter Christian Hackenberg back at his disposal. Though he’s been slotted as high as the first round, Hackenberg hasn’t indicated one way or another whether not he’ll declare for the NFL draft.

At the very least, Moorhead would have returning skill players Saquon Barkley and DaeSean Hamilton to build around.
