With New Year’s Day 2020 officially here, the decade of the 2010s is now history.

During the Championship Drive pre-game show on ESPN, the typical crew of College GameDay got together to break down the New Year’s Day slate and review the decade that was in college football. One topic the crew kicked around was the Player of the Decade, an honor that Kirk Herbstreit bestowed to Penn State great Saquon Barkley.

“I started with (Auburn QB) Cam Newton in my mind, went to (Clemson QB) Deshaun Watson, started to think about other positions. And my favorite guy that I covered in college football was Saquon Barkley,” said Herbstreit. “So I have to go with Saquon Barkley.”

Herbstreit was not alone in his selection with co-host David Pollack surprised someone else went with Barkley:

“Dang. I didn’t know that, but…Saquon Barkley,” said Pollack. “I thought I would be the only one to pick Saquon just because he didn’t get the national attention until his senior year.

“The quads, you just don’t forget how he was put together like a Herschel (Walker) and those guys.”

Barkley was definitely remarkable in three seasons with the Nittany Lions, rushing for 3,843 yards and 43 touchdowns. Those marks rank second and first respectively on Penn State’s all-time list.

For the rest of the hosts, Desmond Howard and Rece Davis did go with Deshaun Watson for his role in establishing Clemson’s current dynasty. Chris “Bear” Fallica went with Texas A&M QB Johnny Manziel.
