Nick Kern Jr., a transfer from VCU, has committed to play in the Big Ten.

Kern will reunite with his coach at VCU, Mike Rhoades, at Penn State, as he announced on social media, and added “Thank you for every part of this journey!” Kern is the second player to transfer from VCU to Penn State after point guard Ace Baldwin.

Kern started 19 of VCU’s 35 games last season, and averaged 5.3 points and 2.7 rebounds over 17.6 minutes per game.

The 6-foot-6, 190-pound forward originally from St. Louis shot 62% from the field while attempting eight threes and converting on just two of them. Notable performances for Kern Jr. from the 2022-23 season included a season-high 17 points in a double-digit win over Fordham, 12 points apiece in wins over Saint Louis and UMass and a 10-point output in a win over Richmond. He scored 5 points and had 2 rebounds in VCU’s NCAA Tournament loss to Saint Mary’s.

Coming out of high school, Kern was rated the No. 7 recruit in Missouri by 247Sports, and he chose VCU after interest from DePaul, Saint Louis and TCU.
