Though nothing official has been announced, the potential three-conference “alliance” is expected to make progress in the days and weeks ahead.

Shortly after the SEC announced plans to add traditional Big 12 powers Texas and Oklahoma, news broke that the B1G, Pac-12, and ACC were in conversations about a potential alliance. A lot of details have not been shared publicly yet, but a Friday report indicated an official announcement could come as soon as next week.

On Saturday, Heather Dinich with ESPN shared comments provided by Penn State AD Sandy Barbour about the potential alliance. Barbour acknowledged that there is the potential for revenue benefits in such an agreement but that is far from the only factor at play.

“I do think that there are conferences out there that could bring value from a monetary standpoint, particularly, speaking about our television contract and our television revenues,” Barbour said. “… The Big 10 really prides itself on being more than just an athletics conference, in terms of our provosts get together, we share some library resources, some other academic resources.”

Barbour did not stop there, going on to say that issues of “like-mindedness” would be beneficial to the B1G:

“I’m not trying to downplay the importance of value as it relates to upsizing our revenues — that certainly is important — but that’s not the only reason,” Barbour said. “And I think that there are some reasons around like-mindedness that would be very valuable to the conference.”

It will be interesting to see how this decision – if and when it is announced – impacts college football moving forward.
