Penn State pulled off a giant flip on the recruiting trail Friday afternoon, pulling a 4-star defensive back off of a commitment to Alabama.

The player is Elliot Washington, a 5-foot-11 and 195 lb. safety out of Venice, Florida for the 2023 recruiting class. Previously committed to Nick Saban’s Crimson Tide since January, Washington flipped that commitment to James Franklin and the Nittany Lions.

“I would like to thank the University of Alabama, Coach Saban, Coach Gillespe and Coach T Rob for your time and effort during my recruitment,” Washington wrote. “…After further conversation with my family, I will be committing to… The Pennsylvania State University.”

According to the 247 Sports Composite Rankings, Washington is a 4-star recruit and the No. 6 safety nationally for the cycle. He is also the 110th overall player in the country regardless of position.

Washington’s commitment brings Penn State’s 2023 recruiting class up to 16 players and is ranked 5th nationally on the team recruiting rankings.
