Toward’s the end of the Penn State-Wisconsin game, Nittany Lions LB Ellis Brooks was trying to make a play as Graham Mertz was scrambling. Brooks hit Mertz in the head, and Brooks was called for targeting and was ejected from the game.

Although FOX analysts agreed with the call, Joel Klatt believes that the targeting rule needs to be adjusted so the player is not ejected from the game. He did not see ill-intent as Brooks’ hit was near the shoulder and came on a bang-bang play.

In three years with the Nittany Lions, Brooks has 130 tackles, 11.5 tackles for loss, 4.5 sacks, 1 interception, 1 pass deflection, and 1 touchdown. He will miss the first half of action next weekend as a result of the targeting call.

Penn State ended up beating No. 12 Wisconsin 16-10 in a thriller.

Next week Penn State plays Ball State in the home opener, and Wisconsin plays Eastern Michigan.
