Penn State has a storied history at the linebacker position with the No. 11 jersey.

The “St1x C1ty” tradition began with former Penn State linebacker LaVar Arrington, who starred for the Nittany Lions from 1997-99. Arrington inspired a trend that numerous Penn State linebackers would follow over the next two-plus decades.

On Saturday during Big Noon Kickoff, FOX shared special messages from some of the Nittany Lions legends who have donned the No. 11 jersey.

“St1x C1ty is about greatness,” Arrington said. “The price that you have to pay … the toll that you have to pay … is pain. Because you’ve got to endure a lot to be great.”

Navarro Bowman, Brandon Bell and Micah Parsons are all featured in the video sharing what the number means to them.

“That 11 just felt like home to me,” Parsons said. “As soon as I touched it, I just heard ‘St1x C1ty’ and it just made me excited. Once I got onto that field and when I’m out there, people are going to know that I’m out there.”

There’s also the matter of the next generation: Abdul Carter. The true sophomore earned the No. 11 jersey last season in his first year on campus and is trying to carry on the tradition.

“It’s not just a number, it’s a standard you’ve got to live up to,” Carter said. “I just go into every game knowing that I just have a huge amount of confidence … I know I’m the baddest person on the field and nobody can really get in the way of what I want to do. I’m trying to be the best linebacker who ever played at Penn State. We’re the highest standard. You don’t just get this number just ‘because.’ So you have to be a player.”

Carter and the Nittany Lions are looking to snap a 6-game losing streak vs. Ohio State on Saturday.
