Penn State no longer has any commitments in its 2023 recruiting class.

On Wednesday, 2023 tight end Mathias Barnwell announced that he has decided to decommit from Penn State. He had been the only prospect committed to the Nittany Lions for that class.

“I’d like to thank the entire Penn State staff and the rest of Nittany Nation for making me feel like family,” Barnwell wrote. “My family and I have decided to really evaluate what’s best for my future. With that, I will be decommitting from Penn State and reopening my recruitment. Please respect our decision.”

Barnwell does not have any rankings from 247Sports, but he has been heavily recruited early in the process. In addition to Penn State, teams like Duke, Maryland, Nebraska, Ole Miss, Pitt, Tennessee, USC, Virginia and Virginia Tech have already extended offers to the talented tight end.

Barnwell is a native of Fredericksburg, Virginia and is listed at 6-foot-5, 240 pounds. He’s a multi-sport athlete at the high school level, also playing basketball, which should improve his skills for the tight end position.
