James Franklin has announced that the Penn State Nittany Lions will have six captains for the upcoming football season. Senior safety Ji’Ayir Brown, redshirt senior quarterback Sean Clifford, senior defensive tackle PJ Mustipher, redshirt junior offensive lineman Juice Scruggs, redshirt senior long snapper Chris Stoll and redshirt senior linebacker Jonathan Sutherland have all been named Penn State’s 2022 captains.

As the team’s redshirt senior quarterback, Clifford is, of course, a notable name on the list. He’s played in 38 games for the Nittany Lions, starting 33, and is currently second in University history in career passing touchdowns with 62, third in passing yards with 7,839, and 10th in wins as a starting quarterback with 21.

Mustipher is expected to be a big part of  Penn State’s defense in 2022. Literally. He checks in at 6-foot-4, 321-pounds and is on the watch list for the Bronco Nagurski Trophy award (which goes to the college football’s best defensive player) and the Outland Trophy award, which goes to the best interior lineman in the United States.

Penn State kicks off the 2022 season against Purdue on the road.
