Sean Clifford might be Penn State’s returning starting quarterback, but he may see quite a competition from Ta’Quan Roberson during the spring, summer and fall as the Nittany Lions look ahead to the 2021 campaign.

Roberson, a redshirt freshman in his third season with the Nittany Lions, earned a major shoutout from new offensive coordinator Mike Yurcich on Twitter on Tuesday morning. The Penn State OC has been impressed with the quarterback’s “championship effort” through winter workouts.

Here’s the tweet Yurcich fired off about Roberson:

With Will Levis transferring out of the program, Roberson might be the top challenger to Clifford’s spot as the starter in 2021. Roberson has appeared in just two career games at Penn State and has attempted just one pass and one rush in his early career.

Clifford is the two-year starter for the Nittany Lions but he struggled at times throughout the 2020 season. Penn State finished the year with a 4-5 record.

It should be an interesting offseason in Happy Valley at the quarterback position. Will Clifford keep his spot atop the depth chart? Or will Roberson be able to win the job?

That’s a big question as Penn State prepares for 2021.
