Penn State takes commanding lead over SMU with another pick-6
Penn State is off to a dominant start defensively against SMU on Saturday afternoon.
The Nittany Lions got on the board with a pick-6 by Dominic DeLuca in the first quarter, but that wouldn’t be their only defensive score of the first half.
A couple of SMU drives later, Mustangs quarterback Kevin Jennings threw another interception that was then returned 59 yards for a touchdown by Penn State linebacker Tony Rojas.
Here’s a replay of the big moment:

It’s been a dreadful start for Jennings, who was excellent overall this season. He’s now thrown 2 pick-6s and had an incomplete pass on a 4th-and-1 on SMU’s first drive when it looked like he had room to run for the first down.
The Mustangs gained 49 yards on their first drive of the game before turning it over on downs. On their ensuing 3 drives, they’ve gained a total of 36 yards on 13 plays. Those drives ended with 2 interceptions and a punt.
The defensive effort has been much-needed for Penn State, as the Nittany Lions can’t get much going offensively. Penn State is averaging just 4.1 yards per play through its first 3 drives of the game.
The winner of this contest will advance to face Boise State in the quarterfinals of the College Football Playoff.
