Penn State ended the season with a disappointing loss to Notre Dame in the College Football Playoff semifinals, and the Nittany Lions are reportedly looking at a departure in the wide receiver department.

According to Hayes Fawcett with On3 Sports, Omari Evans reportedly plans to enter the transfer portal after a breakout 2024 season for Penn State. It’s a big blow in the receiving department with star tight end Tyler Warren also out of eligibility and moving onto the NFL.

Evans set career-high numbers across the board with 21 catches for 415 yards and 5 touchdowns. The big-play speedster had a 22-yard touchdown catch in the Big Ten Championship Game and also had 55 yards and another big-play score against Boise State in the Fiesta Bowl.

The WR position has been problematic for James Franklin’s program in recent seasons with a perceived lack of development and movement out of the program. KeAndre Lambert-Smith jumped from the program to Auburn in the SEC where he set a career-high with 981 receiving yards and 8 touchdowns with the Tigers.

In terms of players to join Penn State, heralded transfer piece Julian Fleming (from Ohio State) Had just 14 catches for 176 yards and a touchdown. While Franklin regularly praised Fleming and other receivers for their contributions, especially as a blocker, there’s no denying Penn State needs more weapons in the passing game to take the offense to another level.

Hopefully, Penn State can keep Trey Wallace for one more season as a piece to build around. Otherwise, there will be a lot of new faces in the passing attack.
