Penn State is having another rough day, but quarterback Sean Clifford just gave the Nittany Lions a chance.

Trailing 31-7 to Iowa in the second half, coach James Franklin put Clifford into the game to replace Will Levis.

The result?

A 28-yard touchdown pass on Clifford’s first play.

Unfortunately for Penn State, the extra point was blocked so the Nittany Lions still trailed 31-13 in the third quarter.

However, more good news ahead.

Clifford stayed in the game and delivered a 68-yard touchdown pass to Jahan Dotson to make it a 31-21 game at State College. Penn State also converted the 2-point conversion.

Those were Clifford’s first two throws of the game. Early in the fourth quarter, he’s 2-for-2 for two touchdowns and 96 yards.

Penn State has won the last six games in this series. Iowa hasn’t defeated Penn State at State College since 2009.

Iowa has won its last two games by a combined score of 84-14.

Penn State is hoping to avoid its first 0-5 start in program history. It would also clinch PSU’s first losing season since 2004.
