A former Penn State linebacker has stepped away from the Utah football program as the team enters fall camp, according to a report.

UteZone reported on Tuesday night that Manny Bowen is no longer a member of the Utah football team. Bowen met with head coach Kyle Whittingham and decided to step away from the team and the game. Reasons behind the departure were not mentioned.

Bowen transferred to Utah mid-year after spending three seasons at Penn State. As a graduate transfer, he would’ve been eligible to play in the 2019 season.

Prior to transferring to Utah, Bowen faced a suspension from team activities at the end of the 2017 season. He missed the Nittany Lions’ final four games of the year and wasn’t reinstated until the summer 2018. Bowen then decided to leave Happy Valley less than a month after rejoining the program.

Bowen finished the 2017 season with 51 total tackles, fifth-highest on the team. He also registered 3.5 tackles for loss and 1.5 sacks. He ended his Penn State career with 136 stops, 12.5 tackles for loss, 3.5 sacks and two forced fumbles.
