A former Penn State offensive coordinator may soon be a head coach again.

Yahoo’s Pete Thamel is reporting that Oregon offensive coordinator Joe Moorhead is the leading candidate to be the next head coach at Akron. A deal could be coming within the next day, per the report.

Moorhead has some familiarity with the Akron program, working with the Zips for 5 seasons. He started his time in Akron in 2004 as the wide receivers coach and recruiting coordinator before adding titles of associate head coach and passing game coordinator to his name in 2005.

From 2006-08, Moorhead was promoted to offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach.

Moorhead took his first head coaching job at Fordham in 2012, a job he had through 2015. In 4 seasons, the Rams were 38-13 with 3 FCS playoff appearances. After that, he was named the offensive coordinator at Penn State from 2016-17 and played a vital role in the Nittany Lions’ B1G championship run in 2016.

Before the 2018 season, Moorhead left Penn State to be the head coach at Mississippi State, a run that lasted just 2 years. The Bulldogs appeared in consecutive bowl games but were 14-12 in those seasons.

Moorhead has been the offensive coordinator at Oregon for the past 2 seasons. He helped lead the Ducks to an impressive victory over Ohio State in Columbus in Week 2.
