For the first time in his NFL career, Saquon Barkley is facing a little adversity. The New York Giants running back is going to be sidelined for a bit due to a high-ankle sprain, the team has announced.
Barkley left Sunday’s Giants-Buccaneers game early after sustaining the injury. He had taken eight carries for 10 yards and had four receptions for 27 yards before departing. The Giants won 32-31.
The high-ankle sprain typically leaves players sidelined for four to eight weeks depending on severity, though it’s unclear just how long Barkley will be out. He had played in each of the Giants’ first three games, rushing for 237 yards and a touchdown. He also has 74 receiving yards on 11 catches.
Barkley is in his second season in the NFL. Last season as a rookie, Barkley rushed for 1,307 yards and 11 touchdowns on 261 carries. He also racked up 721 yards and four touchdowns on 91 receptions.
Barkley was the No. 2 overall draft pick in the 2018 NFL Draft. The Giants are off to a 1-2 start this season.
