Report: Virginia Tech zeroing in on B1G DC to fill head coaching vacancy
A B1G defensive coordinator may be getting the opportunity to run his own program.
Yahoo’s Pete Thamel reported on Tuesday morning that Virginia Tech is zeroing in on Penn State defensive coordinator Brent Pry to fill the head coaching vacancy. The Hokies parted ways with Justin Fuente near the end of the 2021 campaign.
Pry has been at Penn State since 2014 and was on James Franklin’s staff at Vanderbilt before the move to Happy Valley. He’s worked with Franklin for a decade, serving in multiple roles.

When the staff moved from Vanderbilt to Penn State, Pry started out as an assistant head coach, co-defensive coordinator and linebackers coach. In 2016, Pry became the defensive coordinator and continued to serve as the linebackers coach.
Despite owning a 7-5 record, Penn State’s defense proved to be one of the best in the country. The Nittany Lions allowed just 16.8 points per game in 2021, ranking second in the B1G.
Virginia Tech closed out the 2021 with a 6-6 record.
