Everyone is buying into the Saquon Barkley hype. Even folks who cover the NFL.

Recently, NFL.com released its list of the top five college running backs for the 2017 season. And while that top five was loaded with ball-carriers out of the SEC, it was Heisman hopeful out of Penn State that topped the list.

Barkley beat out Derrius Guice (LSU), Royce Freeman (Oregon), Nick Chubb (Georgia) and Bo Scarbrough (Alabama), for the No. 1 spot.

NFL.com analyst Bucky Brooks was the writer who created this list and he gave a reason for why each player was in the top five. Here’s what he had to say about the Penn State ball-carrier:

Blue-collar running back with a versatile game and homerun potential. Barkley is a rare runner who’s capable of mixing finesse and power while working between the tackles or on the edges. Given his ability to create explosive plays on downhill runs or off-tackle jaunts, the Penn State star is a scheme-friendly playmaker who’s capable of playing in any offense at the next level.

With soft hands, polished route-running ability and feisty skills as a pass protector, Barkley is the classic three-down back that every offensive coordinator covets at the RB1 position. If he continues to build off the momentum he created at the end of the 2016 campaign (see Big Ten Championship Game and Rose Bowl performances), he’ll be one of the most highly coveted prospects in the game.

Barkley was one of the top ball-carriers in the country last season, rushing for 1,496 yards and 18 TDs. His 106.9 yards per game average ranked second in the B1G and 24th nationally. His 18 scores tied for seventh-best in the country.

In two seasons with Penn State, Barkley has rushed for 2,572 yards and 25 TDs. He averages 5.7 yards per carry for his career.
