If you ask James Franklin about last year’s College Football Playoff, he’ll tell you that Penn State probably should’ve been in.
The Nittany Lions beat Ohio State in the head-to-head clash in Happy Valley. They went on to win the B1G East and slayed Wisconsin in the B1G Championship Game. But two losses were too much to overcome. Rather than the conference champs playing for a national title, it was Ohio State.
Urban Meyer was elated that his team got one of the four bids for the College Football Playoff. And with the sole loss coming against Penn State, his team certainly belonged. But Meyer doesn’t believe his team was the only one good enough for a playoff berth.
The Buckeyes head coach thought Penn State absolutely belonged as well:
Urban Meyer told me he understands Penn State's frustration from a year ago. "Should they have belonged in that playoff? Absolutely."

Neither team was successful in their postseason appearance, as Penn State fell to USC in the Rose Bowl and Ohio State was clobbered by Clemson in the Fiesta Bowl.
