Was he in or was he out? That is the question everyone has tried to answer following the conclusion of Indiana’s win over Penn State.

On the play in question, Indiana QB Michael Penix Jr. scrambled on a two-point conversion attempt and finally stretched out down the sideline for the pylon. The original call on the field was that Penix scored as it appeared he hit the pylon with the ball.

Following the call on the field, the decision was sent up to the replay booth to decide. That is when things became tricky, to say the least.

In the slow-motion replay, it appeared that the ball made contact with the ground prior to touching the pylon. However, even if that had been the case, there was no conclusive angle showing where the front tip of the ball was when it made contact with the ground.

Mike Pereira, FOX’s rules analyst, took time afterward to weigh in on the play. While he admitted it was very close, the number of “ifs” related to the final decision led the officials to stay with the call on the field:

“Lots of ifs on this one which is why they ended up letting it stand on the field,” said Pereira. “It was a really tough call for the officials but it was a likely and right ending for a game that was fantastic all the way through.”

Heartbreak for the Nittany Lions was jubilation for the Hoosiers, and the controversy of the final play has unfortunately overshadowed what truly turned out to be an incredible game from start to finish.
