What new Penn State TE coach Ty Howle said during his Tuesday press conference
Ty Howle will be taking on a new role with the Penn State staff during the 2021 season. After spending last year as an offensive analyst with the Nittany Lions, he’ll be the new tight ends coach in State College.
Howle, who played at Penn State, came back to his alma mater after stops with NC State and Western Illinois. He was excited to make his return to Happy Valley and now is thrilled for the chance to work with the tight ends on James Franklin’s staff.
On Tuesday, Howle met with the media to talk about his new role with the program, his approach to coaching and how he plans to help the tight end room for the upcoming season.
Here’s what Howle had to say on Turesday while meeting with reporters:
Howle on his young tight ends: "Super, super excited about all three of them. Brenton Strange has done a great job…Theo Johnson has looked great through winter workouts so far. Tyler Warren came in, played a lot of high school quarterback, and has a really progressed."

Howle: "The reason I came back here was for an opportunity like this. When I left Penn State as a player, it was always my goal to come back here as a coach."

Howle on his experience from a recruiting perspective: "It helped out a lot…It also allowed me to create those relationships in the recruiting world with student-athletes. Moving forward I'll have a lot of the same areas Tyler Bowen did."

Howle: "Fortunate for me it was a pretty smooth transition since I'd been here. I'd gotten to know [the tight ends] really well."

"The buy-in has been easy because I know these guys," Howle added.

Howle on learning from Tyler Bowen: "Tyler was always very professional and he was very smart football-wise. I learned a ton from him and we obviously worked really closely. He gets guys to believe and buy-in to what he's teaching."

Howle: "There's nothing like a team in life. A team is special. When I finished playing, it wasn't the four-overtime win against Michigan that I remember the best. It was the time in the locker room. That's something I love and is one of the reasons I'm coaching."

Howle on what he wants to get out of this experience: "I measure success in the type of men that we'll produce here from Penn State. When I was a player that was always something that was talked about."
