3 takeaways from Purdue's big road win over Wisconsin
Purdue defeated Wisconsin 75-69 in Madison on Sunday afternoon to extend its lead atop the Big Ten standings.
This is a huge result for Purdue, who is hoping to repeat as Big Ten regular season champions this season. The Boilermakers were dominant defensively in this win over the Badgers.
Here are 3 takeaways from Purdue’s victory over Wisconsin:
Elite defense
Purdue won this game on the defensive end of the floor. Wisconsin entered this contest with the No. 7-ranked offense in the country, per KenPom’s adjusted efficiency rankings. The Boilermakers held the Badgers to just 41.5% from the floor and only 15.8% from beyond the arc.
AJ Storr, who is by far Wisconsin’s leading scorer, had a rough day at the office thanks to Purdue’s perimeter defense. Storr managed just 14 points on 4-of-15 shooting. He also went 0-for-4 from beyond the arc.
Zach Edey was also a strong deterrent at the rim as he picked up 3 blocks in the win.
Purdue’s guards stepped up
Offensively, this wasn’t Edey’s best game. He still scored 18 points on 7-of-13 shooting, but this was just the second time since Jan. 9 that Edey has failed to score at least 25 points. Edey did chip in 13 rebounds — including 6 offensive — as well as 2 assists.
Lance Jones filled the scoring void by pouring in 20 points in the win. Jones was the only Purdue player who made a 3-point shot in this game, as he went 3-for-7 from beyond the arc. Braden Smith and Fletcher Loyer also scored in double figures with 19 and 12, respectively.
Big Ten title race
This is a huge result for the Big Ten title race. Purdue is now 10-2 in league play and holds a 1.5-game lead over the rest of the conference. Wisconsin, even with the loss, is currently in 2nd place with an 8-3 record.
Wisconsin will have a chance to even the season series against Purdue — and perhaps get back in the title race — in the regular season finale. Purdue will host the Badgers on March 10.
The Boilermakers are hoping to repeat as regular season champions. Last year, they won the league with a 15-5 record in conference play.
