Purdue thrashed Michigan 99-67 on Tuesday night to earn its 4th consecutive win.

The Boilermakers jumped out to a big early lead in this game and never looked back. Purdue took an 11-point lead with 12:55 remaining in the first half and its advantage never went back into the single digits for the rest of the game.

Here are 3 takeaways from Purdue’s victory:

Elite shooting performance

Purdue had one of its best shooting performances of the year in this win. The Boilermakers shot 51.5% from the floor and 66.7% from 3-point range in the victory.

Lance Jones led the way by going 5-of-9 from beyond the arc, but Fletcher Loyer (2-of-3) and Myles Colvin (3-of-3) were big contributors in that area as well. As a team, Purdue went 14-of-21 from downtown. By percentage, this was Purdue’s best 3-point shooting game of the season.

Jones led Purdue with 24 points on 16 shots.

Michigan corralled Zach Edey, but no one else

Zach Edey was held in-check relatively speaking, and finished the game with 16 points and 10 rebounds. Edey had scored 30+ points in 3 straight contests entering this game. He also entered the night averaging over 25 points per game in Big Ten play.

Instead of another outburst, Edey struggled in the post against Michigan center Tarris Reed. He shot just just 6-of-13 from the floor and only got to the foul line 6 times. This continues a trend of Edey struggling against the Wolverines — he’s failed to score 20 points in any of his 5 meetings against them in his career.

However, everyone else in Purdue’s offense had a field day against Michigan’s lackluster defense. Jones’ 24 points were a season-high (his previous best was 17 points). Braden Smith scored 11 points on 4-of-4 shooting. Mason Gillis had 8 points on 3-of-3 shooting. The list could go on, but you get the idea.

Looking ahead

Perhaps the most important aspect of this game is that Purdue was able to give its starters a rest for most of the 2nd half. No Purdue player was on the court for more than 27 minutes in this game (Edey played just 26 minutes).

That rest could prove to be invaluable as Purdue looks to recover after playing its 4th game in the last 11 days. The Boilermakers will now get a little bit of a break schedule-wise as they have 4 days off before facing Rutgers on Sunday.

Purdue has now won 4 games in a row and is projected to win all of its remaining regular season games, according to KenPom. Purdue and Rutgers will face off at 1 p.m. ET on Sunday afternoon.
