Purdue coach Darrell Hazell delivered the news on Tuesday that everyone knew was inevitable — Austin Appleby will be the Boilermakers starting quarterback in 2015.

Appleby was in competition with freshman David Blough, who threatened to take the starting job but couldn’t steal it from the more experienced upperclassman. Appleby had the job coming out spring camp as well.

After Danny Etling started the 2014 under center for Purdue, Appleby replaced him midway through the season. After debuting with an impressive road victory at Illinois, Appleby and the Boilermakers dropped their final six games.

Purdue was missing No. 1 receiver Danny Anthrop for the final three games, but he’ll be back in the fold for Appleby in 2015.

This season, he’ll look to turn around an offense that ranked 108th in the country. Apparently, he’ll have a looser approach while doing so.
