Or maybe he just saw the writing on the wall.

The writing being that Florida, following the suspension of starter Will Grier, struggled with Treon Harris at quarterback. And at Purdue, Appleby was replaced by redshirt freshman David Blough. Grier transferred and Blough isn’t going anywhere.

That combination meant that Appleby was going somewhere. Gainesville, specifically.

The former Purdue quarterback enrolled at Florida in hopes of competing for the starting quarterback job in 2016. He’ll be a graduate transfer so he won’t have to sit out for a season.

Appleby replaced Danny Etling in 2014 and was the team’s starter in second half of the season. Appleby got the nod in the first three games of 2015, but he was benched at the end of non-conference play because of his accuracy issues.

In his five games of action in 2015, Appleby threw for 1,260 yards, eight touchdowns and eight interceptions. He also had four rushing touchdowns.

The 6-5, 240-pound signal-caller can run the read option, which Florida could look to do in 2015.

And if nothing else, he’ll bring a mean stiff-arm to the Gators:
