It looks like the NCAA has denied Purdue running back Sampson James’ appeal to become immediately eligible for the Boilermakers this season.

Purdue head coach Jeff Brohm had hoped the Indiana transfer would be available to provide a boost to the Boilermakers running back position, which is running thin this season due to injuries. Unfortunately, Mike Carmin with the Journal & Courier is reporting James will not be cleared for immediate eligibility.

Running back King Doerue was on the sidelines in street clothes last week against Illinois, and is dealing with an undisclosed illness. He is considered a gametime decision this week against Minnesota. Doerue had taken over the Boilermakers No. 1 running back slot after Zander Horvath suffered a broken fibula during the second game of the season against UConn.

James finished last season as Indiana’s second-leading rushing, with 81 carries for 275 yards and 3 touchdowns. His plans to enter the NCAA Transfer Portal in August was a surprise move, and he has three years of eligibility remaining.
