The father of Purdue basketball player Brandon Newman and decorated Chicago police officer Ronald Newman, has died from complications of COVID-19. He was 59.

A report from Sports Illustrated’s Tom Brew says that Ronald Newman was a 20-year veteran of the Chicago Police Department and was a heavily-decorated officer. During his two-decade career with the force, he received more than 130 awards. He is the third Chicago officer to die from complications of the virus.

Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot announced Ronald Newman’s death.

“I had the opportunity to speak with his widow and offered our deepest condolences to her and the family as well as our continued support for anything they need in this time of grief,” Lightfoot said.

Brandon Newman is a freshman guard at Purdue. He redshirted during the 2019-20 season for the Boilermakers.
