Dropping to 1-3 on the season, the Purdue Boilermakers fell to the Minnesota Golden Gophers (4-0), 38-31, on Saturday at Ross-Ade Stadium in West Lafayette, Indiana.

Down 38-17 at the end of three quarters, Purdue scored 14 unanswered points in the fourth but ultimately came up just short. While they lost the yardage battle, 488-414, the Boilermakers did outrush the Gophers, 123-92.

Led by freshman King Doerue’s 94 yards and two scores, the 123 yards on the ground were a season-high for Purdue. Head coach Jeff Brohm was pleased with the results of his ground attack and said it was the product of a dedicated effort.

Here is what the coach had to say, via Tom Dienhart of GoldandBlack.com:

Prior to Saturday’s improvement, the Boilermakers had totaled just 150 rushing yards in their first three games. After rushing for 96 yards in the season-opening loss to Nevada, Purdue failed to reach 35 yards rushing in either of their next two games.

A three-star prospect out of Amarillo, Texas in the 2019 class, Doerue had just 37 yards on 17 attempts headed into Saturday. Unfortunately for Doerue and the Boilers, the road does not get easier as they travel to University Park to face the No. 12 Penn State Nittany Lions (4-0) on October 5.

Throttling the Maryland Terrapins, 59-0, on September 27, Penn State held Maryland redshirt sophomore Anthony McFarland Jr. to just 24 yards on nine carries.
