Jeff Brohm wasn’t happy. After Purdue’s 34-31 loss to Nevada, a game in which the Boilermakers led by 17 late in the third quarter, it’s hard to blame him.

Purdue owned a 31-14 advantage in the third quarter and appeared to be coasting to a 1-0 start to the 2019 season. But poor defensive plays and a slew of turnovers and mental mistakes in the second half proved to be costly for the Boilermakers.

Nevada scored 20 unanswered points and Brandon Talton buried a 56-yard field goal attempt to life the Wolf Pack over the Boilermakers in Reno. After the game, Brohm continued to come back to one word: disappointing.

“Sum it up the way it is, very disappointing loss, very disappointing start to the season.” Brohm said in a video posted by Gold and Black Illustrated.  “We didn’t compete the way we were supposed to in the second half. We didn’t stay focused and locked in. Understanding that we need to be precise in everything we do all the time. That is my fault.”

Purdue was firing on all cylinders early on and was able to build a 24-7 advantage at halftime. But Purdue had two special teams miscues, Elijah Sindelar threw a late interception and the Boilermakers defense struggled to make tackles late in the game.

For Brohm, it boiled down to toughness.

“We weren’t tough enough to make the play when it needed to be made,” Brohm said.

The 0-1 start is a disappointing one for Purdue, which had high expectations entering the season, and still does. But things get a lot more difficult for the Boilermakers. They return home next Saturday to take on Vanderbilt and end the non-conference schedule against TCU.

If Purdue doesn’t get things corrected, it could result in a second-straight 0-3 start for Brohm and company.
