Matt Painter drops expletive in jab at Indiana fans regarding state of the IU program
Matt Painter has had an up-close view of Indiana for some time now. Painter has been the head coach at Purdue since 2005-06, watching his closest rival cycle through 5 full-time head coaches over that same time frame.
In the offseason, that number will reach 6 IU head coaches with the program confirming Mike Woodson will not be back moving forward. Asked about the state of the program after Sunday’s rivalry game, Painter was ready to weigh in on what he’s seen as a lot of turnover in Bloomington.
He began by recommending Indiana investigate the common denominators related in the recent turnover. Painter also took aim at IU fans and admonished the group concerning their level of support when things go south.
“Like, don’t beat yourself. Like, let’s support somebody. Try that out for once every now and then. When shit goes wrong, like whatever. You think Purdue fans are happy about what just happened?” Painter questioned about Purdue’s unraveling in a 73-58 loss to Indiana.
“You see, a fanbase isn’t the people that tweet. A fanbase is the people that when you’re bleeding, they support you. They jump on and off things (in Bloomington) way too much. Support your players, support your coach. Don’t tweet negative things about them. Be supportive, see how that works for you.”
Painter wasn’t done yet. He turned around and fired a shot at Hoosiers fans, urging them to stop “overdoing shit” when it comes to hyping up prospects and recruits before they suit up together.
“But they build them up and overdo things. Quit overdoing shit. Just accurately talk about what’s actually happening,” said Painter. “Don’t get recruits and say ‘That’s Michael Jordan, that’s Scottie Pippen.’ Then they come out here, well they’re not Michael Jordan or Scottie Pippen. They’re good college players. They build it up and then they go ‘Well what’s wrong?’”
While Painter did end by admitting that is not the entirety of the Indiana fanbase, he also knows it’s a different world for coaches in this era of social media engagement and NIL payments. What that means for the next head coach of the Hoosiers remains to be seen, but Painter was not in the mood to hold back, even in defeat.
