Matt Painter isn't a fan of Purdue's 'IU Sucks' chant
Purdue head coach Matt Painter has been asked several times for his thoughts on the chants directed at center Matt Haarms during the Boilermakers’ trip to Assembly Hall on Tuesday. The “(Bleep) you, Haarms” chant has been a huge topic of discussion since the rivalry game.
The Purdue leader has been pretty mellow on the topic, saying “it’s competitive sports.” But when asked by Nathan Baird of the Journal & Courier, Painter had an interesting response to the chant that echoed through Assembly Hall.
“We do something towards them and a chant that’s inappropriate too, so how can we be mad? You know what I mean,” Painter said. “How can we get upset at them? We’ve got to clean up our own backyard before we can point a finger.”
Painter went on to say that he is “not an ‘IU Sucks’ fan” and that “Purdue needs to worry about itself,” rather than pointing the finger at Indiana.
The “IU Sucks” chant has been a big topic of discussion in West Lafayette, as many have wanted to see the chant go by the wayside. Painter is apparently one of those voting in favor of it being retired.
We’ll see if the new controversy from Bloomington leads to any changes for either program when it comes to student section chants.
