Purdue anchored into top-5 slot in latest AP Poll ahead of Maui Invitational
Purdue opened the 2023-24 college basketball as a top-5 team in the country. The Boilermakers recently ascended to the No. 2 overall spot, and Purdue maintained that spot in the latest AP Top 25.
On Monday, Kansas remained the overwhelming No. 1 overall team with 52 first-place votes. Purdue landed the No. 2 spot with 5 first-place votes while Arizona (3) and UConn (1) also received first-place votes.
Most recently, Purdue beat Xavier 83-71 as a part of the Gavitt Tipoff Games with another dominant performance from Zach Edey. He delivered a double-double with 28 points, 11 rebounds and 4 blocks while going 10-for-11 from the free-throw line in the win.
The Boilermakers are now 3-0 and primed to hit the court Monday evening in the Maui Jim Maui Invitational. Purdue opens that bracket against No. 11 Gonzaga in a crucial nonconference game for Matt Painter’s squad.
Depending on the outcome of Monday’s game, Purdue will face either the winner or the loser from a matchup between Syracuse and No. 7 Tennessee. No. 1 Kansas, No. 4 Marquette, UCLA and Chaminade are other potential opponents in what is a loaded slate of top-25 teams playing in Maui.
We’ll see how Purdue fares this week, but the Boilermakers look primed for another strong season under Painter.
