For a second straight season, a Purdue commit has won Indiana’s prestigious Mr. Basketball honor.

Westfield High School star and future Boilermaker Braden Smith was named Indiana’s Mr. Basketball following the 2021-22 season. He ended his career with 1,629 points and 453 assists, setting school records in both statistical categories.

It’s the first time since 1964-66 that Purdue has had back-to-back winners of the Mr. Basketball award from the state. That previous run included Dennis Brady, Billy Keller and Rick Mount.

Last year, Caleb Furst was the winner of the prestigious honor.

This year, Smith averaged 18.3 points, 6.0 assists, 6.0 rebounds and 1.9 steals per game at Westfield. For his career, Smith posted a 17.9-point, 5.2-rebound and 5.0-assist average.

A 6-foot guard, Smith is considered one of the Top 200 overall prospects in the 2022 recruiting class. He’s also a Top 10 talent from Indiana.

Smith will be the 13th player to win the Indiana Mr. Basketball honor to play at Purdue.
