Purdue will have a happy flight back to West Lafayette on Saturday night after a gutsy 65-58 victory over No. 13 Oregon in Eugene that lifted the 17th-ranked Boilermakers to 7-1 in the Big Ten.

Junior forward Trey Kaufman-Renn led Purdue with 23 points and 11 rebounds, and Braden Smith chipped in 15 points despite not shooting well. Smith needed 15 shots to score his 15 points, but he stuffed the stat sheet with 4 rebounds, 7 assists and 4 steals for Matt Painter’s resurgent team.

As Purdue has been known to do over the years, the Boilermakers prevailed in an ugly game where they only shot 34% and made 2 3-pointers. But they did their damage at the foul line, draining 25 of 30 free throw attempts to grind out the victory that improved them to 15-4 overall.

Purdue sits second in the Big Ten behind 6-0 Michigan State, which will host Illinois on Sunday in a showdown of ranked teams. The Boilermakers, who completed a 2-0 West Coast trip after also winning at Washington, have won 7 in a row after a 1-3 stretch preceding this run of victories.

Meanwhile, Oregon fell to 15-3 overall and 4-3 in its first season in the Big Ten. The Ducks led by 1 at halftime but were shut down completely in the second half, scoring just 27 points. They shot 36% from the field and just 24% from 3-point territory for the game.

Nate Bittle scored 18 points to lead the Ducks, who saw their winning streak end at 3.

Purdue now comes home for 3 straight games, starting with Tuesday night’s showdown against Ohio State. Meanwhile, Oregon stays home to face old Pac-12 rival Washington on Tuesday night.
