Former Purdue cornerback Michael Eargle was shot and killed in downtown Elizabeth, N.J. on Tuesday.

Eargle, was killed blocks away from Elizabeth police headquarters next to the local YMCA, according to the Union County Prosecutor’s Office. It’s uncertain what the motive or cause of Eargle’s death was.

He returned to his hometown and worked with the city housing authority, according his aunt, Deborah Bennett-Smith (via NJ.com).

Eargle spent two years in West Lafayette after transferring from Lackawanna College. He started in two games and played in seven as a junior in 2010. Though he didn’t record any stats in 2011, Eargle graduated with a sociology degree in 2012.

He was 28.
