Purdue opened up the July 4 weekend with a commitment, landing a safety prospect out of Florida for the class of 2023.

The player is Ethon Cole, a 6-foot-2 and 190 lbs. out of Lake Minneola, Florida. He revealed his pledge to the Boilermakers over offers from Indiana and Minnesota in a piece published by USA TODAY.

According to the 247 Sports Composite Rankings, Cole is a 3-star prospect for the class of 2023. He is also the No. 103 safety nationally.

Cole spoke positively of a Purdue education. He also pointed to the work of DB coach Ron English and the facilities of the Boilermakers.

“Coach Ron English has a lot of history coaching and he has a good background,” Cole wrote in his announcement. “He’s been a head coach before, and he’s put a lot of defensive backs in the NFL. That was really important for me. I’ll be in good hands and I wanted to feel confident with that.

“I really liked the facilities, too and they told me about the improvements that they’re making. But, for me, it’s about the people inside the facilities. The better the relationship I had with my position coach, I felt like that was really important.”
