Aidan O’Connell wants to run it back one last time.

The 5th-year senior quarterback announced Monday morning that he intends to return to West Lafayette for a 6th season with the program.

“Being able to live out my dream at Purdue has been an unspeakable blessing,” wrote the Illinois native. “God has been gracious to me far beyond what I deserve. Through unending support from many, I have had experiences that I will cherish forever. I am eternally grateful for all those who have helped me get to this point.

“On that note, I have decided to return to Purdue for my 6th year and use the remainder of my eligibility. I look forward to another great season in West Lafayette with my coaches, teammates, and our fan base.”

O’Connell was in a quarterback rotation for 2019 and 2020 before fully taking the reins of the offense in 2021. He took off. He was selected as an All-Big Ten Second Team quarterback by both league media and league coaches this season after throwing for 3,174 yards and 23 touchdowns. O’Connell’s completion percentage (73.5%) led all qualified Big Ten passers this season.

And as he ascended, Purdue fought for the Big Ten West in coach Jeff Brohm’s 5th season. The Boilermakers posted an 8-4 regular-season record and the best record the program has enjoyed in conference play (6-3) since 2003. Purdue finished in a 3-way tie with Minnesota and Wisconsin for 2nd in the West.
