Heading into their Championship Week game with Indiana, Purdue will be without another cornerback, as Geovonte Howard announced his intent to leave West Lafayette.

Howard, a junior college transfer who arrived on campus this summer has entered the NCAA transfer portal. Sophomore corner DJ Johnson opted out earlier this month after transferring from Iowa.

This list of Boilermakers not returning is long.

Freshman four-star running back Tirek Murphy, red-shirt freshman three-star running back Da’Joun Hewitt, sophomore running back Alfred Armour, and sophomore wide receiver Amad Anderson, all have decided to sit out the remainder of the season and potentially leave the program.

Howard played sparingly in 2020, seeing action in five of the Boilermakers’ six games. He was on the field for 84 snaps on defense, making four tackles and breaking up three passes. Howard saw action on special teams seeing 69 snaps.

Junior Dedrick Mackey and sophomore Cory Trice have been the starters at corner in 2020, with fifth-year senior Simeon Smiley playing the nickel spot.

Purdue lost four cornerback after 2019 due to transfers, with Jordan Rucker, Kenneth Major, Tyler Hamilton and Byron Perkins all leaving the program.
