Purdue is turning back the clock this weekend with its uniform choice.

When the Boilermakers hit the field in West Lafayette against Northwestern on Saturday, they will be wearing a uniform that is a throwback to 2000 and the 20th anniversary of the Purdue team that made it to the Rose Bowl.

If you aren’t familiar with or weren’t alive for Purdue’s run to Pasadena, you probably recognize the quarterback who helped lead the Boilermakers. That would be current New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees.

In its fourth year under head coach Joe Tiller and led by Brees, Purdue captured the Big Ten crown for the first time since 1967.

The key wins for the Boilermakers that year came on the road against Michigan and Northwestern along with a big home win against Ohio State. Despite two conference losses, Purdue won the tiebreaker and earned the berth in the Rose Bowl.

The Boilermakers ultimately lost to Washington in the bowl but are fondly remembered by the Purdue fan base.

With this being the 20th anniversary, it’s a perfect chance to honor this 2000 team. It also may have fans wondering if this Purdue crew, off to a 2-0 start, could be the first team to win a Big Ten crown since that 2000 squad.
