Purdue’s running back has been stretched pretty thin over the last few weeks, and it’s forced Jeff Brohm to make a bit of a change to the roster.

According to Mike Carmin of the Journal & Courier, Brohm will be moving wide receiver Jackson Anthrop into a running back role to complement his duties as a wide receiver. At least for the foreseeable future, the junior will have multiple responsibilities in the offense.

The decision comes after Purdue rushed for just 23 yards on 25 carries against TCU on Saturday. The Boilermakers dropped a 34-13 decision to fall to 1-2 on the season. Through three games, Purdue has rushed for just 150 yards, the lowest total by nearly 100 yards in the B1G.

Anthrop has been a speedy receiver and playmaker for Purdue during his first three seasons. He played a huge role in the offense as a freshman in 2017, catching 43 passes for 423 yards and five touchdowns. Because of the arrival of emergence of other receivers, Anthrop’s production has dropped off, catching just 11 passes over the last two seasons. But it sounds like he’ll be more involved in the offense moving forward.

So far, Zander Horvath and King Doerue have carried most of the workload out of the backfield for the Boilermakers, but they have still struggled to pile up yardage.

During the offseason, Tario Fuller suffered a significant jaw injury that has left him sidelined for the early portion of the season. It’s unclear if and when he’ll be back in the mix, but that was another significant loss for the Boilers.

Purdue has an off week before hosting Minnesota next Saturday.
